American Gold Coins - Why American Eagles May Be Your Best Investment

by Daniel Wright

Gold coins were used as the form of currency in the earliest days of the civilization. But the coins are considered as a form of investment in these days. Bullion gold coins are especially well recognized for the investment purpose. The price for gold coins has a tendency to fluctuate a lot from a day to day depending upon the gold prices. Each and every country has an official bullion gold coin. 'American Eagle' gold coins are the official bullion gold coins of USA.

American Eagle Gold Coins are popular gold bullion coins minted in the U.S. The gold contained within the coins is legally required to come entirely from US sources. The American Gold Eagle coin was introduced in 1986, during a period when South African gold was banned from import to protest apartheid, and its popularity quickly soared as it met the high demand for gold under the boycott.

American Eagle Coins are available in 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz denominations, and are 22 carat gold (91.67% pure gold). The coin's denomination indicates the coin's gold content, with the additional metals being in addition to the weight of the gold. Unlike South African Kruggerands which contain a copper alloy, American Eagles contain a copper and silver alloy, giving them a lighter, yellow tone that the deep orange of Kruggerands.

One side of the coin bears a picture of Lady Liberty raising a torch, while the other side depicts a family of eagles complete with children. The male eagle signifies America's military strength and resolve to defend itself and the people who live there, while it carries an olive branch to symbolize its love of and preference for peace. Each denomination has exactly the same design, but has a different amount of stated gold content.

All American gold coins come with a stated face value. One-ounce coins have a face value of $50, half-ounce coins carry a face value of $25, quarter-ounce coins bear a $10 face value, and 0.1 ounce coins have a face value of $5. However, these face values are symbolic, meant to emphasize that the coins are legal tender. Their actual value depends on the market value of the gold that they contain, plus a small premium. An American Eagle coin with a $50 face value is presently worth about $900.

American gold coins are the most popular gold coin in the world. They are beautifully designed and carry powerful symbolism, and make and add to any coin collection. With their weight and content being backed by the US mint, there will be no dispute over the amount of invested money. Every serious gold investor invests in American Eagles!
